The brilliant green hues present in an Australian green sapphire is due to a beautiful mixture of blue and yellow trace elements. The deeper the green colour, the more blue is present, and the brighter the colour, the more yellow is present. The green colour also comes from the concentration of Fe (Iron) inside the corundum. Green Australian sapphires come in varying unique tones, from a soft and muted green, to a vivid and deep green. Darker green sapphires, much like an emerald, are considered much more valuable, and are ultimately rarer in nature.
Green sapphires are often associated with tranquillity and calmness, with the precious gemstone radiating a calming aura for the wearer. It is also a symbol of loyalty, trust and integrity, therefore making for the perfect gemstone to adorn your engagement ring or wedding band. Green sapphires are also believed to aid in emotional healing, encouraging the wearer to manifest love, thoughtfulness and peace.
Australian Sapphires can be found in two distinct regions on the Eastern side of the Australian continent. In NSW they are found within the New England district of Northern NSW near Inverell and Glenn Innes. For Queensland, sapphires are found within the Anakie Gemfields around the villages of Sapphire and Rubyvale, and to the west of Emerald. NSW fields have large open cut mechanical mining whereas the Queensland fields have both open cut and small underground operations.
Combined with support from the Australian government, Australian sapphires are mined under government oversight with strong pro-environmental and worker laws. Once a sapphire deposit has been exhausted, it is rejuvinated to its original state. The final result being the mined area returned to normal.
Therefore, these semi-precious gemstones are an attractive option for the ethical and sustainably focused clientele.
